The Nationals announced at 5:31 PM ET — just over an hour before the scheduled 6:45 PM ET first pitch — that the game would be delayed due to inclement weather. The National Weather Service had issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the Washington, D.C. area, in effect until 9 PM ET, with a band of heavy storms sweeping up the I-95 corridor. AccuWeather forecasts showed at least a 50% chance of rain persisting through midnight, leaving little window for play.

With no let-up in the radar, the decision was made to call the game off entirely rather than push into the early hours.

The postponed game was rescheduled as the early half of a split day-night doubleheader on Thursday, June 25, the original off-day between this four-game set and the teams' next series. The regularly scheduled Thursday game — the finale of the four-game series — will proceed as the evening leg of the twin bill. Specific start times for the doubleheader have not yet been announced.

Originally scheduled as the opener of a four-game series (June 22–25), Monday's postponement compresses the slate: both teams now face five games in four days, with a doubleheader sandwiched between Wednesday's matchup and Friday's departures. The Phillies head to New York to face the Mets after the series, while the Nationals travel to Baltimore to open a three-game set against the Orioles.

The Phillies arrived in Washington at 42–35, holding second place in the NL East and riding a two-game winning streak. The Nationals sat at 40–38, fourth in the division, having lost their previous game. Philadelphia's projected starter was not announced ahead of the postponement; Washington had Foster Griffin (7–2, 3.32 ERA) scheduled to take the mound.

The additional game on Thursday will also require both clubs to adjust their pitching plans, as the scheduled starters for Monday will now need to be slotted into a reshuffled rotation across the doubleheader and the remaining series games.

The postponement was the first weather-related cancellation of the 2026 season at Nationals Park. The two teams had already met three times earlier in the season — all in Philadelphia from March 30 to April 1 — with the Phillies taking two of three. Philadelphia leads the all-time series since 2022 with 32 wins to Washington's 17.

The series continues with the originally scheduled game on Tuesday, June 23 at 6:45 PM ET at Nationals Park, weather permitting. The split doubleheader on Thursday, June 25 will feature the makeup game in the afternoon followed by the series finale in the evening.
